Everyone enjoys colour, whether it be in art, décor, fashion, make-up or our choice of car. Most people have favourite colours and hues that resonate with them, but what about having a colourful name? Here we look at first names inspired by colours.

Blue

Blue encourages images of blue skies and blue waters – natural beauty. It is also the name of Beyonce and Jay Z’s daughter, Ivy Blue.

Coral

Coral is a vibrant pinky orange colour, and it is a female name derived from the Greek word for ‘red marine reef’. Cora and Carol stem from the original name Coral, which is another name that brings the beauty of nature to mind.

Cyan

Cyan is a colour between green and blue and is becoming increasingly popular as a name. The name comes from the Greek word ‘Kuaneos’, which means dark blue.  

Indigo

Indigo is a popular girl’s name that also describes the stunning hue of purple/blue. It comes from the Greek word for ‘India’, which can, along with ‘Indie or Indy’, be used as a variant of Indigo.

Grey

Gray or Grey is one of the most popular male colour names. It refers to the mix of white and black and can be spelt either way, with Grayson being a common variant of the name.

Jade

Jade is a beautiful green gemstone, as well as a long-standing and popular female name. The name has Spanish origin, meaning ‘Stone of the side’.

Jett

Jett or Jet comes from an Old French word describing a deep-black, soft sedimentary rock called lignite. Although not too common, it is a strong male name that has a certain worldlines to it.

Lilac

Lilac is pale pinky-purple colour and a beautifully fragrant shrub. It is a lovely female name that conjures up floral blooms and springtime joy. 

Saffron

Saffron comes from the Arabic word ‘Zafaran’, meaning ‘Golden leaves.’ It is also a spice used in Mediterranean dishes, a shade of the colour orange and a female name.  

Scarlet

Scarlet, or Scarlett, is a striking red colour and a beautiful girl’s name. It is derived from the Old French word ‘Escarlat’ and is a consistently popular name in the UK. Famous Scarlets include Scarlett Johanson.
