It may sound like a strange request – to want to alter your birth certificate. However, it is something people sometimes wish to do. So, can you change the name stated on your birth certificate? Read on for all you need to know.
Wales and England
You will need a deed poll if you want to change your name. However, you are allowed to change your child’s name during the first year. If you apply within 12 months after your child’s birth, you can have their name changed, and the register office will change the old record to reflect your new name. On long-form certificates, the old name is still present; the new one is located in the designated area at the bottom. Only the new name is displayed on short-form certificates.
The name can only be changed by the mother, father, or guardian, and only one name change is permitted. In England and Wales, there are only two ways to modify the name that appears on your birth certificate as an adult. You can either obtain a Gender Recognition Certificate or demonstrate that your original certificate has an error.
Scotland
You can simply apply to the National Records of Scotland (NRS) to have your name changed if you are the subject of a Parental Order issued in Scotland, were legally adopted in Scotland, and are listed on the Gender Recognition Register.
You may only modify your first name once before applying. If you decide you don’t like your child’s given name, you can alter it, just like in England and Wales, within a year. A birth certificate’s forename can only be changed once.
Using a Deed Poll
If you want to change your name, using a deed poll is the only reliable way of doing so officially. Although this does not change the original name on your birth certificate, it will enable you to change your name with all relevant bodies and to live as your new name.
Although it can seem more official, changing your name on your birth certificate is not an accessible legal process. A deed poll is just as legitimate, considerably less expensive, and simpler to complete.
