Who can witness my deed poll?

You must have an independent person to witness you executing (signing) your deed poll. Your witness will be required to provide-

  • their full name,
  • their home address (or business address for professionals),
  • their occupation, and
  • their signature

The independent person you choose does not need to be professionally qualified (i.e. solicitor, doctor, etc) but they must meet three key requirements:

They must –

  1. be over the age of 18,
  2. not be related to you, and
  3. not live at the same address
Examples of suitable people

The following types of people would normally be suitable to act as your witness –

  • a work colleague
  • a neighbour
  • an unrelated friend
Examples of unsuitable people

The following types of people would not be suitable to act as your witness –

  • your mother
  • your partner (whether married or not)
  • your house mate
